One of Australia's most prolific thespians, Rachel Griffiths is an Academy Award Nominated and multi-award winning actress. After a successful career on the Australian stage, Rachel Griffiths burst onto the international scene in 1994 with P.J. Hogan's much loved MURIEL'S WEDDING.
Her performance opposite Toni Collette earned her both the Australian Film Critics Circle Award and the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award for Best Supporting Actress. Griffiths followed this success with a very different role as Arabella in Michael Winterbottom's 1996 release JUDE before returning to Australia to star in COSI (again with Collette), and CHILDREN OF THE REVOLUTION. In 1997 she was reunited with P.J. Hogan on the hit comedy MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING, which also starred Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz. In the same year, she appeared as a London prostitute in director Udayan Prasad's MY SON THE FANATIC. Other film credits include: AMY directed by Nadia Tass, Scala Productions' DIVORCING JACK, Kudos Productions' AMONG GIANTS, Dragon Pictures' VERY ANNIE MARY, Mirage Enterprise's BLOWDRY, New Line's BLOW, Walt Disney's THE ROOKIE, THE HARD WORD directed by Scott Roberts, HBO Films' ANGEL, STEP UP directed by Anne Fletcher and starred with Heath Ledger in the Australian historical drama NED KELLY from director Gregor Jordan (TWO HANDS). Her recent film credits include the relationship drama BURNING MAN alongside Matthew Goode , Essie Davis and Kerry Fox, and BEAUTIFUL KATE directorial debut by Rachel Ward. After premiering at the 2009 Sydney Film Festival, BEAUTIFUL KATE, a gripping family drama, set in the remote Australia landscape was critically acclaimed both locally and internationally. Rachel's moving performance earnt her both an AFI Award for Best Lead Actress and the Film Critics Circle Award for Best Lead actress.
Griffiths has earned international appreciation for her work, namely for HILARY & JACKIE (1998), opposite Emily Watson and directed by Anand Tucker. Rachel earned an Oscar and Screen Actor's Guild nomination for her role as one of the volatile Du Pre sisters. In 2002, Griffiths' portrayal of Brenda in the critically acclaimed HBO/Alan Ball drama SIX FEET UNDER garnered a TV Critics Association nomination and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series. Rachel received a 2008 Emmy Award Nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for BROTHERS & SISTERS. The long running series garnered a loyal following after five seasons for HBO.
On stage Griffiths has been honoured for her role as Catherine in the Melbourne Theatre Company's 2002 production of David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize winning PROOF with Helpmann and Green Room Awards, and most recently she tread the boards in the Broadway production of "Other Desert Cities," opposite Stockard Channing, Stacy Keach and Thomas Sadoski.
Griffiths has also had great success as a filmmaker. Her short films include TULIP (1998), which won festival awards at Aspen, Melbourne and Palm Springs, and ROUNDABOUT (2001), which received the Best Australian Short Film Award at the 2002 Melbourne International Film Festival and numerous AFI nominations including Best Short Fiction. She will move behind the camera again in 2012 for her debut as a feature film director with the project B MODEL, an adaptation of the book by Australian author Miranda Darling.
Rachel shortly returned to the small screen as Christine Assange in the Australian telemovie UNDERGROUND based on the formative years of the Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. The telemovie also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. She recently completed filming the horror feature PATRICK which will hit screens in 2013.
