John Dengate is a media naturalist and author who has presented wildlife and environmental items on radio and TV for over 30 years. His enthusiasm for wildlife has helped many people to discover what an amazing world we live in.

He has written a range of books and articles on Australian natural history including the definitive guide to attracting birds to your backyard, items on natural pest control, and a wide variety of work on our fascinating wildlife.

He is a past councillor of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (now Birdlife Australia), the patron of the Cumberland Bird Observers Club and has led ecotourism activities in Australia and overseas.

John's working life has been with government conservation agencies, including the Australian Museum, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the NSW EPA. He recently retired from the position of Director of Public Affairs for the NSW Environment Department and received the Public Service Medal in recognition of this work.

His extensive travels in Australia and overseas have taken him across both the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, through the jungles of South America, to the Galapagos and the plains of Africa.

These travels and his work with conservation agencies have given him a particular insight into the plight of the animals and plants that share our world.

Now that he is not working full time, he is looking forward to supporting communities to be as effective as they can in solving conservation issues. Australia has just about the worst record of extinctions in the western world, but he believes that community action can play a major role in arresting the decline.
