Professor John Hewson, OA is an economic and financial expert with vast experience in academia, business, government, media, the financial system and is also actively involved in many charitable organisations.
John Hewson has worked as an economist for the Australian Treasury and the Reserve Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and consulted extensively internationally and nationally to organizations, associations and financial institutions including the ADB and UNESCAP.
John Hewson's political career included seven years as a ministerial advisor and a further eight years as the Member for Wentworth in the Federal Parliament. He was Shadow Finance Minister, Shadow Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Industry and Commerce and Leader of the Liberal Party and the Federal Coalition in Opposition for four years.
With an impressive and extensive academia background Professor Hewson was Professor of Economics at UNSW for 11 years (1978-87) and Head of the School of Economics for nearly 5 years. During that time he launched Executive Programs in Financial Markets, in the US, Europe and Asia taking more than 300 executives from Australia and NZ, on 13 trips, to study in the world’s financial centres. He was also a Director of The Japanese Economic Management Studies Centre, a Research Associate and Member of the Management Committee, Centre for Applied Economic Research, and a Member, Advisory Board, Industrial Relations Research Centre and NSW Institute of Languages and was a Visiting Professor, Keio University, Japan and Institute of South East Asian Studies, Singapore. Professor Hewson was also Professor of Management and Dean, Macquarie Graduate School of Management at Macquarie University for nearly 2 1/2 years,
An accomplished writer, John Hewson has written two books on international finance and international banking, and innumerable articles on the subject in professional journals, speeches, lectures, memorial addresses and articles in newspapers and magazines.
In 2001 John Hewson was awarded the Member in the Order of Australia for service to business and economics, to the Australian Parliament and politics, and to the community.
