Huon Hooke

Travels From:
Sydney

Fee Range: B

Huon Hooke is one of Australia's foremost independent wine writers and critics.

He makes his living entirely out of writing, judging, lecturing and educating about wine. He has been writing about wine every week since 1983, and currently has two weekly wine columns (Sydney Morning Herald Good Living - for which he is best known, and Good Weekend magazine), and a monthly column in Australian Gourmet Traveller.

He contributes regularly to the British wine magazine Decanter and the new Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine, co-authors the best-selling annual Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide, and contributes to two other wine guides (The Slow Food Guide to the Wines of the World, published in Italy, and the Oz Clarke Pocket Wine Guide, in the UK).

He is also the Australian contributor for the Microsoft Wine Guide CD-ROM.

A wine judge since 1987, he judges in between eight and ten wine competitions a year in Australia and overseas, runs wine courses in Sydney where he lives (notably at the Sydney University Continuing Education Centre), and chairs the judging panel of the annual Tucker Seabrook Restaurant Wine List of the Year Awards.

Huon's first major book, "Max Schubert, Winemaker", about the creator of Grange Hermitage, was published in 1994 and revised in 1996. His latest book is "Words On Wine" (SMH Books, 1997). Since 1984 he has won six awards for wine writing.

He is often asked to speak on wine at seminars, conferences and other education events. Happily, the life of a wine writer involves a lot of food, travel and wine, which happen to be his three main loves.
