Big Van has a diverse Rugby playing career representing clubs in New Zealand, Italy, Japan and Australia. At 203cm, Van is a dominant lineout jumper and offers years of experience when it come to packing a scrum.

Van is a natural leader and transfers his experience to the young up and coming Reds team. A huge asset is the fact Van has only missed 2 games in 11 seasons of top flight rugby due to a hand injury, not bad for a powerful ball running lock that puts his body on the line week in, week out.

Van recently resigned with the QLD Reds in the 2010 season that will see him through to the Rugby World Cup in 2011 and critics believe that Van, even at 34 is in his best form and is expected to have his name thrown around about a call-up to the Wallabies.

With a huge work rate and stout defense, this set piece dominator will be the key to the Reds success.

In 2010 the Reds veteran took on a vital leadership role with captain James Horwill suffering a season ending injury early on. He proved that with responsibility came better performance with the 2010 season being one of his best along with this current season.

Due too salary cap restrictions starting in the 2012 season, Van has been allowed to explore other options at his own will. Van has been a consistent and crucial member of the 2011 QLD Reds squad being there technical line out caller and jumper!

When Van is not playing Rugby he can be found tackling the waves at his local point, finding surfing as the perfect escape from the mental and physical pressures that being a professional player can put on the body.
