The tough former St Kilda and Richmond back-pocket is now coaching at Collingwood, his third AFL club after time with Footscray and the West Coast Eagles.

He led the West Coast Eagles to the 1992 and 1994 premierships, the first to be won by a non-Victorian club.

In recognition of his skills, he received the W.A. Institute of Sport Coach of the Year in 1992 and the Inaugural AFL Coach of the Year Award in 1991. He has also been awarded the Players Association Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1991.

In 2002 Mick took the Collingwood Magpies right through to a Grand Final showdown against reigning Premiers, the Brisbane Lions. It slipped through the Magpies hands this year, but Mick took the young side further than they or any Magpie supporter could have hoped for when the season started. Their transformation as a team was a phenomenal coaching achievement for Malthouse.
