Jeffrey M. Schwartz, M.D., a leading neuroscientist and Research Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA School of Medicine, is a seminal thinker and the world's leading authority on the field of self-directed neuroplasticity – in plain English, the minds' ability to rewire the brain. It's something that all great leaders have learned how to do – control and harness their mental powers.

He is the author of over 100 scientific publications in the fields of neuroscience and psychiatry. Dr. Schwartz has also authored three popular books with HarperCollins, "Brain Lock: Free Yourself From Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior" (1997), "The Mind and the Brain: Neuroplasticity and the Power of Mental Force" (2002), and "Dear Patrick: Letters to a Young Man" (2003).

In 2004 he served as Head Consultant to Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese on the motion picture The Aviator and in 2005 had featured appearances in two pieces on THE AVIATOR DVD, The Affliction of Howard Hughes: OCD, and OCD Panel w/ Messrs. Di Caprio & Scorsese.

His major research interest over the past two decades has been brain imaging/functional neuroanatomy and cognitive-behavioral therapy, with a focus on the pathological mechanisms and psychological treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Dr. Schwartz received an honors degree in philosophy from the University of Rochester, and in the 1970s began to immerse himself in Buddhist philosophy, in particular, the philosophy of mindfulness, or conscious awareness. This is the idea that the mind is an active participant in the world, and that when the actions of the mind have an effect on the workings of the brain. It became his goal to find a scientific underpinning for the belief that mindfulness affects how the brain works.
