Mia Freedman is the voice of her generation and Australia's most high profile spokesperson for young women. A highly-sought after personality on television, radio and newspapers, Mia made her name in magazines where she is the undisputed queen of the glossies.
She has been an editor since age 24 when she became the world's youngest editor of Cosmopolitan, the world's number one magazine with 60 international editions.
Beginning her career doing work experience 15 years ago at Cleo magazine, Mia worked her way up through the ranks. After writing for every leading magazine in the country including Marie Claire, New Woman and Elle, Mia was offered the editorship of Cosmo. Over the next 100 issues, she took the magazine to the number one position in both circulation and readership. She was voted Editor of the Year by her peers in the Australian Magazine Association in 2000.
Her proudest achievement has been her Body Image initiative that saw Cosmo ban diets and became the only Australian magazine to feature women sized 6-16 in every issue. Mia has been outspoken in her view that the media needs to be more responsible about the body image messages it conveys to young women and has received wide acclaim for this initiative.
In 2001, Mia launched three new magazines: Cosmo Bride, Cosmo Pregnancy and Cosmo Hair & Beauty, which all became number one in their respective categories.
In 2003, Mia was appointed editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, Cleo and Dolly which, combined, reach 2.5 million (79% of) young women aged 15-35 every month, making her the absolute expert on this highly sought-after Generation Y demographic.
On the homefront, Mia is a married mother of two and manages to juggle being a weekend soccer-mum with a staff of 70. She has first-hand experience on the popular issue of work/life balance both as a high profile woman trying to balance her own life and an employer of other women looking for that balance.
With 99% of her staff being female and having worked for a female boss for her entire career, Mia also has invaluable insights into managing and motivating women in the workplace. And she has many tips for avoiding common mistakes that women make in their career.
Mia is a regular social commentator on the Today Show, A Current Affair, The Glasshouse and various pay TV programs discussing a variety of social topics affecting women, everything from career to plastic surgery and relationships. She is a high-profile weekly columnist for The Sunday Age and the Sun-Herald and her humorous social commentary book, The New Black was released to wide acclaim in 2005.
Testimonial:
We just wanted to tell you how very happy we were to have Mia Freedman as MC for our Lindt Christmas media launch..Mia fitted in immediately as if she was part of the Lindt team. She made a great effort to understand exactly what we were expecting from her and ensured that she would convey the key marketing messages in a fun and entertaining way. Her media background meant she also had a good understanding of what the media would relate to....
We wanted our Lindt Christmas Lunch to be relaxed and fun, as a Christmas lunch should be, and Mia certainly helped us to achieve this. We can thoroughly recommend Mia as a consummate professional who is also very entertaining and a joy to work with.
