Ruben Meerman is a surfer, scientist, television presenter, children's author and entertainer.

He is a regular reporter on marine science for the ABC's flagship science program CATALYST and appears as a regular guest on SLEEK GEEKS with Adam Spencer and Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, CAN WE HELP? with Peter Rowsthorn and Channel Seven's SUNRISE with Mel and Kochie.

He performs hundreds of live science shows every year on stages at public and corporate events, primary and high schools across Australia. Combining spectacular demonstrations with fast paced humour, clear explanations and everyday applications, Ruben's presentations ignite and satisfy curious minds of all ages.

His weekly science segment on ABC TV's ROLLER COASTER topped the 2008 Australian children's television ratings for kids aged 5 to 12. Billed as "Elliot and the Surfing Scientist", it has become the weekly 'must-see' program for kids and their parents.

Ruben has written three children's science books (published by ABC Books), scores of science features for newspapers and magazines and a plethora of hands-on science education resources for primary and high school teachers (published by ABC Science Online).

Ruben moved to Queensland from Vlissingen, a small coastal village in the Netherlands, when he was just nine years old. He immediately fell in love with the Pacific Ocean, the outdoor lifestyle, friendly people, amazing wildlife. According to his teachers, his Aussie accent had fully developed within six months of arrival.

His scientific career began as a physicist producing thin film optical coatings for industrial, medical and military lasers for a small engineering firm on the Gold Coast. After completing a graduate diploma in science communication, he taught primary science education at Griffith University's Gold Coast campus and launched his science education program under the Surfing Scientist banner in 1996. And the future? As Ruben says there's plenty more science to teach and waves to catch.
