Ian Allen is the Executive Producer of ABC Science Online.
He is also responsible for 'The Lab' which is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Online Science gateway. This is a major web-site, offering a great depth of original and innovative content created specifically for the online medium. It's also a very easy way to access any of the science content broadcast by the ABC on TV or Radio.
The Lab has been a major online success story. It was established in 1997 and in that same year won the ATOM (Australian Teachers Of Media) award for Best Online Multimedia Production, and the AIMIA (Australian Interactive Multimedia Association) award for Best Multimedia/Online Producer of the year. In 1999 it won the science category in both of the top Australian internet awards.
The Lab currently accounts for around 10% of all traffic to ABC Online. Within the ABC it is regarded as a major innovation engine.
Prior to creating The Lab, Ian was the writer and content director for the science CD-Rom Ingenious. This interactive title was based upon five contemporary Australian science mysteries.
Ian has been full-time on the frontline of the digital revolution for over 5 years now, and has been intimately involved in engineering the ABC's corporate adaptation to the new medium.
Ian can talk about not only the big-picture in regards to where the digital revolution is taking us, but also about very practical matters such as "how do we get there from here?"
