Stephen Halmarick is widely regarded as one of Australia’s best economic communicators with over 39 years’ experience as a financial markets/banking economist, including as Chief Economist and Head of Global Economic & Markets Research (GEMR) at Commonwealth Bank of Australia (2018-2025).

He has significant experience in presenting economic and market views and forecasts, including at the Board and C-Suite level, as well as large client events and 1:1 client meetings.

Stephen's strong leadership, compliance, regulatory and governance skills were put into practice in leading the CommBank GEMR team, and being a Member-elected Director on the Commonwealth Bank Group Superannuation Board (2016-2024) and as Chair of the Australian Business Economists (2008-2017).

In May 2025 Stephen established his own economics consulting business, Economics Unchained and joined the InEconomics network of independent economists. Stephen is an energetic, empathetic and strong leader, dedicated to driving change, strategic planning and bringing the best out of team members to help drive team excellence. This was evidenced by the CommBank GEMR team being voted the no. 1 Australian economic team, no. 1 for FX forecasts, no. 1 for FX commentary and no. 1 for ESG/Sustainable research in the 2024 Peter Lee Institutional and Corporate client surveys.

Stephen led the project to use CommBank internally generated data to help better understand the Australian economy and develop the Household Spending Insights (HSI) research product.

Stephen also developed the Sustainable Economics research strategy to help clients better understand and drive the energy transition and response to climate change policy in Australia.
