Dr Tracy Westerman AM, Western Australia’s Australian of the Year for 2018

Dr. Tracy Westerman AM is a proud Nyamal woman from the Pilbara region of Western Australia and a trailblazer in Aboriginal mental health, suicide prevention, and cultural competency. In 2003, she became the first Aboriginal person to complete a combined Masters and PhD in Clinical Psychology, despite undertaking most of her tertiary education via distance learning. Dr. Westerman is the founder and Managing Director of Indigenous Psychological Services (IPS), established in 1998 to address the high rates of mental illness among Aboriginal people. Her work has led to the development of unique, culturally validated psychological assessment tools and training programs that have been delivered nationally and internationally. She has trained over 40,000 practitioners across Australia, making her one of the most sought-after trainers in the country.

In 2018, Dr. Westerman launched the Dr. Tracy Westerman Indigenous Psychology Scholarship Program to increase the number of Indigenous psychologists in Australia. She also founded the Westerman Jilya Institute for Indigenous Mental Health in 2020, aiming to drive best practice in Indigenous mental health and suicide prevention. Her numerous accolades include being named Western Australia's Australian of the Year in 2018, receiving the Telstra Women's Business Award (WA) in 2020, and being appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2021. Dr. Westerman's unwavering commitment to improving mental health outcomes for Aboriginal communities continues to inspire and effect meaningful change.
