Resilience & Human Durability Expert | Former Elite Counter-Terrorist Operative | Founder, Australian Centre for Human Durability

Shot 14 times. Multiple massive injuries. Bleeding on the ground for 3 hours. 30 seconds from death. 2 years later, against all odds, returned to full duties. Post Traumatic Growth not PTSD.

Most people break. Some bounce back. The truly exceptional go beyond Resilience to Human Durability.

Derrick McManus doesn't just epitomise resilience – he embodies Human Durability. Where resilience gets you back to where you were, Human Durability makes you unbreakable. Human Durability is your capacity to ‘Sustain Optimal Performance’ while everything around you is falling apart, to grow stronger through what should destroy you, and to thrive when others fall apart or merely survive.

Doctors and professionals predicted he'd never walk properly. Never work again. Never return to work, let alone to an elite level. When Derrick said he wanted back in the STAR Group, they laughed in his face.

They stopped laughing when he proved them wrong. Every. Single. Time.
Two-and-a-half years later, he returned to full duties as a Police STAR Group sniper, tactical diver and counter-terrorist operative – an elite unit trained by the military elite SAS. His journey is more than a story of resilience; it's about achieving and sustaining optimal performance under extreme pressure.

What makes Derrick's story uniquely powerful is his strength and his vulnerability in his experience of Post-Traumatic Growth, not PTSD, from this life-threatening incident. However, when he later faced divorce and separation from his children, he was diagnosed with mild depression and PTSD – demonstrating that mental health challenges can affect anyone. Within one month of treatment, he was completely cleared, again defying the odds.

Founder of the Australian Centre for Human Durability, Derrick now teaches high-performers – from CEOs and fighter pilots to real estate teams – how to master both resilience and human durability: going beyond "bouncing back" to thriving physically, mentally and emotionally in any circumstances. Drawing on world-first research with universities and military special forces, his insights blend battlefield-tested resilience strategies with advanced human durability principles, offering deeply human lessons on Mindset, Leadership, and Mental Health.

Derrick continues to take on challenges. He has walked the Kokoda Track - once as a trekker and then as a leader of 47 other trekkers and has curated conversations about men’s mental health around the campfire. He has ridden his mountain bike across the top of the Nepalese Himalayas, at -15 degrees Celsius and reaching heights above Everest Base Camp. He has also been selected to wear Green and Gold for Australia in the world age group triathlon championships. This guy doesn’t stop.

With a unique mix of commanding presence, proven expertise, and quick-witted humour, Derrick delivers transformational keynotes and facilitated workshops that challenge limitations, shift perspectives and equip audiences with practical tools for extraordinary results under pressure. Featured on A Current Affair, 7 Sunrise, and Good Morning Australia, plus radio across Australia, he embodies the principle of “Go Beyond Resilience To Human Durability And Sustained Optimal Performance”.
