Ivan Aristeguieta is an award-winning stand-up comedian, writer and performer, affectionately known as the “Maracas from Caracas.” Originally from Venezuela, he’s spent the past decade living in Australia: observing, learning, blending in, and making a very good living making fun of everyone around him. Now a true-blue, dinky-di “Venez-stralian,” he’s fully embraced his adopted home. (Though he’s still not sure who she is in “She’ll be right.”)
Ivan left Venezuela after being carjacked at gunpoint—a true story—and remains deeply grateful to Australia for giving him citizenship.
As a stand-up comedian, he has performed across the globe, from South America to the US, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and the UK, appearing at and headlining major comedy festivals and iconic rooms worldwide.
Audiences may have seen him on television or online, performing at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala (2016–2025), the Just For Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival, or as a guest panelist on shows including Have You Been Paying Attention?, The Project, The Weekly, Hughesy, We Have a Problem and The Living Room. In 2016, his Australian immigration experience was fictionalised in the short-form series Lost in Pronunciation (ABC iView), which he co-created, co-wrote and starred in.
In 2021, his live show Piñata was nominated for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s top honour—Most Outstanding Comedy. He has released three full-length comedy specials: Chorizo Sizzle (ABC iView), The Fourth Floor, and Happy Papi, the latter recently released on Paramount+.
Beyond comedy, Ivan is a trained cook, food technologist and brewer—a loud and proud food nerd. During the pandemic, he created and hosted the online hit About This Much – Live, a follow-along cooking party streamed from his kitchen via Zoom. When he’s not on stage, he’s probably at home making his own chorizo.
