Eleanor Hall is the voice of ABC radio current affairs at lunchtime. She hosts the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's award winning daily lunchtime newshour, The World Today. Part of the flagship ABC radio current affairs unit, which also includes AM and PM, The World Today has a million listeners a day in Australia alone and is regularly the most visited online news site on the ABC.
Eleanor has hosted The World Today since 2001. She interviews dozens of people every week on a program which is a news agenda setter, covering breaking international and national stories and providing incisive analysis and debate as well as featuring field pieces on trends and issues. She regularly interviews politicians, has covered more than a dozen budgets and has conducted interview panels on every Federal election since 2001. She also makes sure her audience hears from compelling local and international thinkers on less political issues. On any day, Eleanor may be conducting interviews on breaking news from the Middle East or Asia, wrangling a live debate about Australian or US health or economic policy or running a panel discussion about pornography trends or Zimbabwean poetry.
With two decades of journalistic experience and with degrees from around the world, Eleanor is a truly international journalist who has reported with intelligence and compassion from all corners of the globe.
Before joining The World Today, she worked in television, for ABC News, the 7.30 Report, Foreign Correspondent and Lateline. She was the ABC's Washington correspondent and covered the Clinton impeachment in the late 1990s and prior to that she was a political correspondent for five years in the Canberra parliamentary press gallery.
Eleanor made her professional home at the ABC after freelancing for US National Public Radio from Central America and working and studying in the United States as the youngest ever recipient of the Harkness Fellowship. She earned her Masters in Journalism from Columbia University in New York.
Prior to joining the ABC, Eleanor was a scriptwriter on the documentary, Chile Hasta Cuando, which won the Brazilian and Cuban film festival awards.
In 2009 she won a scholarship to the UK where she was a Fellow at Oxford University's Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism and submitted a paper on the eruption of social media into politics in the YouTube age, focusing on the Obama e-campaign.
In 2011 she was invited to participate in the America Australia Leadership Dialogue on the US west coast. In 2012 she was invited to become a Hoover Media Fellow at the Hoover Institution. She also won the 2012 European Union Journalism award.
