Karina is the face of Queensland's flagship ABC News bulletin.
Born in Sri Lanka and moved to Australia with her family as a young child. During the Colombo riots of 1983, her family's 100 year old businesses were burnt down. Leaving Sri Lanka, escaping the violence of the country's civil war, has had the greatest impact on Karina's life and as such, she sees everything in life as an opportunity.
Karina Carvalho began her career in Perth after graduating from the WA Academy of Performing Arts as a broadcast major. Direct from Perth, she secured a position with the BBC and worked for BBC World News and the HARDtalk program as a producer.
While at HARDtalk she travelled throughout the United Kingdom and the United States, she also produced interviews for sporting program ExtraTime. Guests included Wallalbies great John Eales, English cricket captain Michael Vaughan and boxing legend Larry Holmes.
After London, Karina returned to Australia and to Perth working for ABC TV and radio as a reporter.
She was soon appointed as the 7pm News presenter in WA. Karina then moved to Melbourne to cohost the ABC's national News Breakfast program. In April 2013, she went north to Brisbane and 7pm News becoming one of Australia's few solo women readers in prime time and also one of the youngest.
Karina is a huge sports fan (especially rugby and cricket) she also loves the arts so her appeal as an MC crosses many sectors. Karina has recently MC'd events for The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, Queensland Small Business Week, The Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Business South Bank. She has also hosted functions for CEDA, Anglicare & the WA Chinese Chamber of Commerce.
