As the founder of BackTrack, Bernie’s exceptional work and innovation was recognised at the 2020 Australian of the Year Awards, where he was named as Local Hero.
Bernie was also named National Rural Health Alliance Unsung Hero (2019), and has received the Spera Australian Rural Education Award (2018), the Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Award (2017), a Churchill Fellowship (2014) and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of New England (2020). He and BackTrack were the subject of the award-winning documentary ‘Backtrack Boys’ and the biography ‘Back on Track’.
He has dedicated a lifetime to his passion for helping wild dogs and wild kids, using and sharing lessons learnt from Aboriginal men and old school stockmen in remote areas of Australia. He compounded those learnings on a Churchill scholarship, before returning to build an organisation that enabled him to give young people having a hard time a new life journey.
