David Hobson shot to fame when he appeared as Rodolfo in Baz Luhrmann's acclaimed production of La boheme for The Australian Opera.

La boheme was televised both nationally and internationally in the USA and UK, and is available on video and DVD. He has since appeared throughout Australia, and for San Francisco Opera in the US in a range of operatic roles by Mozart, Rossini, Gluck, Bizet and Puccini, becoming well-known to Australian audiences through his appearances in radical updatings of classical opera works. In 1997, he returned to working in the area of composition and film, and received a 1998 ARIA award for best video, Now until the Break of Day, which was filmed in collaboration with Christine Anu and Baz Luhrmann. He is also heard on the soundtrack to the film, Elizabeth and Better than Sex.

In 1999, David released his first CD of compositions titled Inside this Room, which was created with David Hirschfelder (composer for the award winning films Strictly Ballroom, Shine, and Elizabeth), and in 2001 his first solo recording, French and Italian Arias, was released on the ABC Classics label. This was followed up in 2002 with the recording Handel Arias, again for ABC Classics, this album becoming a bestseller and rising to number 27 in the ARIA album sales charts - remarkable for a classical recording. David has composed the music for the feature film, One Perfect Day, which was released in Australia earlier this year. His latest CD, Cinema Paradiso, was released in June 2004.

David's TV/video credits include Orpheus in Orpheus and Eurydice, Class Acts for the ABC, Good Morning America, The Today Show for Channel 9 and regular appearances on Carols in the Domain and Carols by Candelight.

David has featured as guest performer in a range of popular music concerts including Gala New Year's Eve appearances, The Australian Pops Orchestra, and a performance in the presence of Prince Edward.

David Hobson is the recipient of several prestigious industry awards: Operatic Performer of the Year in the MO Awards; the Sydney Critic's Circle Award for his performances of Rodolfo and Orpheus, and The Age Performing Arts Award for Best Performer in Opera.
