Michael P. Smith is an established leader in the mobile and wireless communication industry and is a well-respected commentator in industry and consumer sectors.



Michael has an interesting, thought-provoking story to tell. Since his early days in the 1980s as sales manager for a mobile telecoms dealership he has taken on the world, heading up leading telecommunications, mobile and satellite communications companies in Asia, Europe and the USA.

In November 2003, Michael was appointed to lead operations in the Sunshine State for Vodafone, the world's largest mobile phone company. Michael has boosted Vodafone's market share in Queensland from 12 to 20 per cent � in part through conducting the biggest promotional event of its kind in Australia's history with a 680,000 red SIM giveaway in The Sunday Mail.

Michael was Asia Pacific Vice-President for Stratos Global Corporation, a world leading provider of mobile and fixed satellite communications solutions for government, enterprise and individual customers operating beyond the reach of traditional terrestrial telecommunications.

While at Stratos, Michael delivered the key plank in Stratos' global strategy, the start-up operation in the Asia Pacific region which grew company revenues by more than US$200 million in two years and established distribution operations in Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, The Philippines, Taiwan, PNG, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Thailand. 



Prior to this, Michael held roles including General Manager of Telstra's Global Satellite business, CEO of PT Jastrindo Dinamika � an Indonesian mobile carrier and several other directorships. Among his many achievements in this time were the launch of a high-speed satellite device for CNN and the successful merger of Telstra's satellite business with KPN Royal Dutch Telecom's satellite assets, headquartered in The Hague, The Netherlands.



A telecommunications expert and respected industry commentator, Michael has an interesting and insightful story to tell on a variety of topics.



Michael is well respected throughout the industry and has presented numerous papers at conferences held by the United Nations, World Broadcasting Union, CommunicAsia and several other regional gatherings.



While his experience and track record is revered, his style is irreverent, insightful and very entertaining. Untethered to an office desk, a landline or a corporate suit, he challenges convention and has become a consumer champion.



During his career Michael has been:

a member of the Victorian Premier's Multimedia Taskforce � advising government on the impact of convergence and multimedia technologies involved in renegotiating a strategic alliance between a government body and a leading telecommunications organisation



Director of Executive Council (Board) of Geneva-based entity, Satellite Aircom


Invited to present papers at conferences hosted by the United Nations, World Broadcasting Union, CommunicAsia and several other regional forums

and he is currently a director on the Board of the Queensland Orchestra

He speaks fluent Bahasa Indonesian, having lived and worked in Jakarta, Indonesia.
