Will Steffen is an Earth System scientist, with an emphasis on sustainability and climate change. He is a leading figure in the development of the Anthropocene concept, the proposed new geological epoch in Earth history, and is an expert on the role of human activities in the future directions of the planetary environment. He is an Emeritus Professor at the Australian National University (ANU), Canberra, and is a Councillor on the publicly-funded Climate Council of Australia that delivers independent expert information about climate change. From 1998 to mid-2004, Steffen was Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme, based in Stockholm. He continues active research with colleagues in Europe and Australia, and is a frequent voice in the media on climate change and the Anthropocene.
