2024 AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR
Professor Georgina Long AO and Professor Richard Scolyer AO are Co-Medical Directors of Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA). Richard is a global leader in melanoma pathology and Georgina is a global leader in drug therapy development. They were named joint 2024 Australians of the Year for their work towards zero deaths from melanoma.
Professors Long and Scolyer also co-lead MIA's translational research laboratory at The University of Sydney and were both appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for their distinguished service to medicine.
Prof Long is a Professor of Melanoma Medical Oncology and Translational Research at MIA, The University of Sydney, and is at the forefront of global advances in drug therapy for melanoma. She leads the internationally renowned clinical trials team at MIA with a focus on immunotherapy and targeted therapy. She has treated more melanoma patients with immunotherapy than other clinician in the world.
In a double world first, Prof Long was the first woman and the first Australian to be President of the prestigious US-based Society for Melanoma Research (SMR). Prof Long has authored over 530 publications in melanoma clinical and translational research, has presented at hundreds of international conferences, leads drug therapy melanoma management guidelines around the world and advises many institutions and companies on drug development. In recognition of her groundbreaking work, she has received many eminent awards. Prof Long's H index as of Sept 2024 was 141, a measure of her impact.
Prof Scolyer is the world's leading melanoma pathologist who is also Senior Staff Specialist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Conjoint Professor at The University of Sydney. Each year he is sent thousands of the most difficult to diagnose melanoma and other cases from around the world for expert opinion.
Prof Scolyer has authored over 950 publications, chaired multiple international expert panels, is Vice-Chair of the American Joint Committee on Cancer Melanoma Expert Panel that developed the staging system used to manage all melanoma patients worldwide, was Editor of WHO Classification of Skin Tumours and has received many prestigious international awards.
Richard is going through his own cancer journey after being diagnosed with glioblastoma (GBM) in June 2023.
